A Historic Day

Tuesday, May 14th was a historic day in Minnesota.  Governor Dayton signed the bill that allows same sex marriage in Minnesota and people can start getting married on August 1st, the day it goes into effect.  In fact, Minneapolis City Hall  will open at 12:01 am to accommodate the many that will marry that day.  According to an analysis by UCLA, in the first three years of same sex marriage being legal in Minnesota, $42 million will be pumped into the economy as well $3 million in tax revenue.

I don't typically talk about my political beliefs on my blog and I don't really intend to start now.  The issue of allowing same sex couples to marry isn't a political belief for me, nor a religious one.  It's a civil right.  It's a human right.  A right that we all have now in the state of Minnesota.  We are the 12th state in the nation to pass a law like this as well as the 3rd state this month alone.  We're catching on, America.  Keep it going.

A couple of my best friends throughout my life are gay and I am so happy that they will have the choice and freedom to marry who they love.

I'm proud to be a Minnesotan every day but I'm extra proud to live in this state right now.  Ok, back to our regularly scheduled programming tomorrow.

Random Acts of Kindness

As part of my New Year's Resolutions, I said I wanted to be the best person I can be.  That is a very generic statement but also allows for a lot to be included within that statement.  One of the ways one can be the best person they can be is through random acts of kindness.  This again is a generic idea but with many options that can fall within the concept.

My dad told me of this story back in December. He was in the skyway in downtown St. Paul and saw a family of four walking through and stopped them to ask if they by chance were going to a certain museum that was nearby.  The mom with some hesitation said, "Yeeessss....." and my dad handed the family four tickets for free admission to the museum.  The family was very appreciative and one of the little girls exclaimed, "It's my birthday!"  The family went on their way as my dad did the same and the little girl waved to my dad and said, "Thank you!".  I know my dad doesn't want credit for this on my blog but I thought it was a great example of a random act of kindness.  What may seem as not a big deal to you may turn out to mean the world to someone else.  And it might happen to be their birthday, which may make it even more special.

From Thanksgiving to January 3rd, my company participated in an activity called Healthy Habits.  Employees could sign up to play bingo.  I signed up and received my electronic bingo card and each day, I would get an email with a healthy habit attached.  If I participated in the healthy habit within 48 hours, I could mark that activity off of my bingo card.  If I got bingo, I could turn my card in for $20.  I didn't care about the $20, I just wanted to do healthy habits each day.  The healthy habits were not just for diet or exercise related but healthy for your mind, body, spirit, etc. Here are a couple examples:
  • Eat whole grains today
  • Watch a classic movie with family or a friend
  • Spend one hour helping someone else
  • Read a fiction book for 20 minutes
  • Have a "no TV" night at home
  • Tune out the world and breathe deeply for 10 minutes
  • Recycle unneeded papers
You get the idea.  One of the activities was "Do a random act of kindness".  I wasn't sure what I wanted to do with this one and I thought about going through some type of drive-thru either food or coffee and order something and then tell the employee that I wanted to pay for the car behind me also.  That way the person behind me would come up to the window and expect to pay but be told that the car in front of them already paid for them.  I would be gone by that point and they would hopefully be thankful and appreciative by the gesture of a stranger.  I didn't do that though but it's a great idea and I do plan to do that at least once this year.  I instead decided to write an email to a coworker.  I happened to be going through some old work related writings that were three years old.  (We have to write a monthly narrative each month and submit to our manager.)  I found that I gave some nice compliments to one of my coworkers, who still works there, however we are on opposite sides of the suite and do not work within the same department nor do we even see each other that often.  I thought it would be nice to email her and let her know of the compliments and kind words I said about her in one of my narratives from 2007.  She responded that I had made her day and that she missed me being in the department.  It wasn't until after I sent the email and received her response that I thought that was a perfect random act of kindness and used that to complete my bingo card square.

I was the recipient of a random act of kindness this past week.  I wrote that one of my resolutions was to write hand-written letters and notes.  I received a package in the mail and received a lovely homemade stationery kit from my blogging friend, Ang.  Ang and I have only met once but since I read her blog, I feel like I really know her and she probably feels the same about me.  She said she wanted to help me with my resolution as well as helping one of her friends by purchasing her stationery for me to use.  Thank you, Ang!  Your kindness to me has and will go a long way.  Here are some pictures of the stationery I received.  Ang, if you haven't already received my hand-written thank you note in the mail on of course the stationery you gave me, you will be receiving it very shortly.

We shouldn't need a bingo card or a $20 incentive to do these sorts of activities and I'd like to challenge you to do a random act of kindness at least once this year. We all probably do random acts of kindness frequently because it's part of our nature, however try and think about something you want to do for someone else. To give you some help, I found a website that gives you kindness ideas.

Some are better than others and many of them do not require any money.  It's worth it to go through the whole list (there are 210 suggestions) to see what is right for you.  I do not want to push any of these ideas or concepts on you and I only tell them to you as I think you will find happiness within yourself as well as onto others.  We can always use more happiness in our lives.

To All You Posers

Dear Posers,

This letter includes, but not limited to, young females. There is a phenomenon that is sweeping the nation that I can no longer stay silent about and must voice my opinion. Most people I know smile when they are getting their picture taken. Some smile with their teeth and some do not. What I cannot take any longer is this pose I am seeing everywhere. Where did this come from? When did it start? I don't even know what to call it...The Zoolander Magnum Face, model pose, kiss pose, I-think-I'm-sexy-pose, etc. Girls, this pose looks stupid. No, you're not stupid, but all of your pictures are! Fast forward 20 years from now while looking through your pictures getting disappointed and thinking, Why the hell I am posing like that in every single photo? My advice to you is simple: Stop looking foolish and start smiling again.

Sincerely,

A Teeth Smiler

P.S. You are going to get premature wrinkles around your mouth if you continue this behavior.

Public pictures compliments of Flikr

If anyone can enlighten me regarding this movement, please do so. I'd love to hear your comments!

Happy Earth Day!

Happy Earth Day to you!  In this day in age, Earth Day has become ever more popular and celebrated as though it is a holiday.  I like that!  I'm glad that most of us paying attention and doing what we can to help this wonderful planet that we live.  At work, we each received a tree today to plant in honor of Earth Day.  I thought that was a great idea by my company.

Powder was very curious of this tree

I know there are more things that I can do to help our planet but I am making sure of the following:

I use cloth bags when going to the grocery store.  It was a little weird at first bringing in my own bags (Especially since they say Bylerly's on them and I don't go to Bylerly's to shop but Cub, Rainbow and Festival.-I got them for free) but I got used to it quickly.  The bags pack up so nicely and they are very easy to carry out of the store and into the house.  I recommend using them if you don't already.  They are available at all grocery stores for a small fee as well as places like JCPenney, Wal~Mart and any other large retailer.

I use an insulated lunch bag that I use to bring my lunch to work.  No need for brown paper bags.  Buy a cloth, vinyl or insulated lunch bag.  Look how cute they can be!

When we do get a plastic bag from the store, we save it and reuse it.  We have a place we keep all our plastic bags.  If we get an abundance of them, they will be dropped off at the "plastic bag drop off spot" (for lack of better term) at Festival Foods closest to our house.

I turn off lights/TV/radio whenever I'm not in the room.  This was instilled in me at an early age by my parents.  I don't think it was because of conserving energy back then but because of saving money.  Either way, it's a good thing.

I do not litter.  I think back to when my Dad was younger and he would describe that people so often would throw garbage out their car windows.  It was normal.  Now, that idea is ridiculous. Don't even throw your gum on the ground.  (I catch myself doing this every great once in a while but I'm becoming more conscious of this)  I get mad when people litter.  There is just no need for it.

I'm paperless.  I receive an electronic copy of my credit card statements/bills/bank statements instead of receiving a paper bill in the mail.  Go paperless with as many as you can.  Most companies offer this option.

Recycle anything that you can!

While we are on the topic of being Green, I thought that I would bring up an article I read recently.  Because of the pesticides used on our fruits and vegetables, we are often reminded to buy organics fruits and veggies.  There are some fruits and veggies that you can still buy that are not organic that will not be affected by pesticides, however there are some that are considered "dirty" and should always be purchased as organic.

The Dirty Dozen-Must Buy Organic Foods: (fruits and veggies that tend to be laden with pesticides when grown conventionally, EVEN after washing)

Fruit:
Apples
Cherries
Grapes, imported (Chile)
Nectarines
Peaches
Pears
Raspberries
Strawberries

Vegetables:
Bell Peppers
Celery
Potatoes
Spinach

No need to go organic with these foods: (these products generally do not contain pesticide residue)

Fruit:
Bananas
Kiwi
Mangos
Papaya
Pineapple

Vegetables:
Asparagus
Avocado
Broccoli
Cauliflower
Corn
Onion
Peas

Take care of our Earth as much as you can.

Blood, you have plenty of it

Have you ever donated blood before? If you haven’t, it’s pretty easy, especially if you have one of the Memorial Blood Center Buses come to your place of employment. I just gave a pint of my blood 30 minutes ago. You can donate right there and be back to work in less than an hour. I try to give blood whenever I am eligible. You can donate blood every 59 days. There are blood shortages quite frequently, especially for certain types so if you have the time, give blood. You may not know who the recipient is but I guarantee they appreciate their efforts. You are helping someone continue to LIVE. There are multiple places to donate, but here’s Memorial’s website if you are interested. If you need any other incentives, they are donating a pound of food for every pint of blood they take and you can even win a cruise. If you have a Dr. named Dr. Acula, I would be leary to giving him your blood. If you don't get it, then you might need more help than I would be able to give you. :)
