A week ago last Tuesday, I went to Target Field with my dad to see the first place Twins battle it out with their rivals, the Chicago White Sox. The Twins were in first place, up 3 games from the White Sox. The game we went to was the first of the series and the Twins took a nice 4-0 lead in the 1st with a HR from Hudson and a nice triple by Kubel before the White Sox came back in the 2nd inning with three runs to make the score 4-3 and in the 4th it was tied 4-4. In the bottom of the 5th inning, Delmon Young was up and my dad says, "He's going to hit a home run and hit the US Bank sign in left field", and that's exactly what happened. 5-4 Twins. Fast forward to the top of the 9th and the Sox countered with another HR to tie the score at 5-5. The game went into extra innings and in the 10th, the Sox scored again, making it 6-5 White Sox before the Twins had one last shot to tie or win. Jim Thome is not the fastest runner on the team. Anyone who watches Twins baseball knows this. Thome was thrown out at home in the bottom of the 3rd inning due to his sloth-like pace and it was just a killer because we wouldn't be sitting in the position we were in if he hadn't been tagged out. We'd at least be tied. So, bottom of the 10th inning, Delmon Young is up and gets a base hit and look who's up next, Jim Thome. All I can think of and say is, "Redeem yourself, Thome. Redeem yourself for getting tagged out at home". The pitch comes across the plate and WHACK!!!! As soon as Thome swung, you knew it was gone. A 420 foot HR into right field and almost onto the plaza. Young scores, Thome scores and TWINS WIN 7-6!! You are hereby redeemed Thome! Obviously the crowd and team were going nuts. The whole team was at home plate waiting to greet Thome as he crossed the plate as though they had just won the World Series. That was the BEST game I've been to at Target Field all year. The Twins would go on to win 2 of 3 in the series to continue in first place in the division and up by 5 games. At the time of this writing, the Twins are still in first place, up 3.5 games from the White Sox.
I had a lot of fun being there with my dad. My parents went to Target Field together back in May and I got to go to a game with each one of them this year, which means a lot to me.
It was a great MN sports day all-around since the day of the game was also the day that Brett Favre committed again to be a part of the MN Vikings for one more season. Yay!
